I heard a great definition of compassion and mercy from a friend of mine. Compassion and mercy are what one receives when they should have received justice and didn't. Meaning we often deserve more consequence for our actions than we actually receive. Even in the case of something that happened recently, I asked for mercy for someone who really deserved full punishment for what they had done which was compounded with and full of deceit. Of course, no one will ever hear the true story when that person or someone else tells it, because I am unsure if they are even aware of what I plead for on behalf of that person.
However, we do have free will to either be compassionate and merciful, or full of hatred. In light of Megan Meier Day: a day to end or educate others about bullying, I leave you this post. The past two years, I have seen exactly what Mother Teresa said below and it has been a guiding force in how I do things and view the world these days. Especially with all the drama in the last six months.
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind
anyway.
If you are
successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine
enemies. Succeed anyway.
If
you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and
sincere anyway.
What
you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create
anyway.
If
you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy
anyway.
The
good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will
never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is
between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. ~ Mother Teresa
